Learning to navigate in Cwm Tryfan   Course Outline

Day 1: We will look at the basic building blocks of navigation: symbols and scale, orientating the map, taking a description from the map, using a compass, contour interpretation, distance estimation - pacing and timing.

Day 2: We will apply the skills learnt on day one to a mountain route - you might find yourself navigating across the Glyder plateau in poor visibility!

What experience do I need? Some previous mountain walking experience is usefull but not essential.

What kit is required? Normal mountain walking gear - boots, waterproofs, warm clothing. You will also need a compass and 1:25000 map of Snowdonia. I will email you with a detailed kit list when you book on.

Who can join a navigation course? Anyone can join an open navigation course, however under 18's must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

What happens if the weather is bad? This is one course where it helps if the weather is bad - poor visibility only re-enforces the need for good navigation techniques and strategies!
